Hi, Tried to install Linux on a P7120, finally Ubuntu 5.10 was running without any problem. Installation, WLAN (Intel), Sound, Modem are working. Even the non vesa screen resolution was found automatically. Thanks to Fujitsu finally they implemented 1280x768 into the video bios. But, do to the fact that the bay device is connected to the SATA controller and the 1,8" HD to the IDE controller all other distri's (SuSE 10.0, FC4, RH EL WS4, Knoppix,Mandriva 2006) will fail at the installation stage!!
Did anyone else tried to install Linux? With what success?

Slackware failed to find the CDROM during installation. I have successfully tried Ubuntu 5.10 & 5.04 to it.
But the display is only 1024x768, did u install any patch (e.g. 915resolution) to make 1280 work?
I also was not able to activate the wireless device (need Madwifi-ng?)

Hello, Guess i changed just some settings within the xorg.conf. Changed 1024x768 to 1280x786 and vesa to i810. the 915resolution tool showed me that 1280x768 is included into the video bios. Never got WLAN to work properly. Guess you have to install NDISWrapper.

my wifi is working after upgrading to 2.6.14 kernel, and compiling with madwifi-ng as below: http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=105437
my 1280 display also works, with 915resolution.
But the DVD drive was NOT found!! /dev/scd0 was not created, even though installation stage can see it. Found a few websites talking about enabling libata in grub option, but no luck.

Hi there, I have installed Ubuntu 5.10 with the same results. DVD/RW doesn't work and I don't know what to do with it. Majority of linux distributions doesn't detect DVD even during install stage, so Ubuntu is probably the best choice. Why it works with DVD during stage and not later, its still a question. Does anyone have an issue with front headphones and mic? I can't get headphones working and built-in mic records so much noise its close to useless. BTW: Can anyone of experienced linux owners of P7210 post their xorg.conf? Thanks, t. |

Hi
I have got debian installed upon the p7120, but have not configured sound etc. I had to recompile the kernel for the sata dvd to work. Working for Fujitsu, makes things a bit easier as I can ask the designers certain things on the laptop, this helps me in configuring kernel etc. Helped me configure the P7010, which I still use till the P7120 is configured.
I had to do a network install of debian as the cdrom was not recognised till the kernel was recompiled. |

Can you please post your kernel .config or at least part necessary for making DVD work? I am not a linux guru but I know how to recompile kernel in Ubuntu (which is de facto Debian). When you finish notebook configuration, kernel config, xorg.conf etc. would help a lot to rest of the world. Thanks in advance :) Other issues with my notebook running Ubuntu are: - mic has very high noise level, I guess something is misconfigured - headphone jack is not working, speakers seen as "headphone" - "eco" button not detected - fingerprint not working not even as a scrollbutton (but there could be a solution: http://linuxbiometrics.com) - sd cardreader not working (maybe this could help but I didn't try yet http://mmc.drzeus.cx/wiki/Linux/Drivers/sdhci) - energy consumption is higher than on Windows - maybe wrong power management configuration is responsible - I don't know. I would also would like to have eco button working similar way as under Windows. Did anyone faced and solved any of those? Thanks, t. |

Hi All
currently documenting how both the P7010 and P7120 are put together with debian. Both machines are similar.
When I learn howto secure media wiki, I will post the url. I have spoke and tried the sdhci drivers, and am assured by the developers that the sd slot won't be support some some time.

joseph, did you get the DVD working?
the sound just works in my case. You may try running alsamixer, and play around with the volume, and turn off all those CEF (press M to mute) |

I don't know if this will help with the 7120, but for user sound on a p7010, I had to change permissions to 666 on /dev/sound*, /dev/mix* and /dev/dsp*

Hi, I might be missing something, but i cant get the 1280x768 listing from 915resolution (ver: 0.5-2)... did you force it? 915resolution -l gives me this: Intel 800/900 Series VBIOS Hack : version 0.5.2 Chipset: 915GM BIOS: TYPE 1 Mode Table Offset: $C0000 + $269 Mode Table Entries: 36 Mode 30 : 640x480, 8 bits/pixel Mode 32 : 800x600, 8 bits/pixel Mode 34 : 1024x768, 8 bits/pixel Mode 38 : 1280x1024, 8 bits/pixel Mode 3a : 1600x1200, 8 bits/pixel Mode 3c : 1920x1440, 8 bits/pixel Mode 41 : 640x480, 16 bits/pixel Mode 43 : 800x600, 16 bits/pixel Mode 45 : 1024x768, 16 bits/pixel Mode 49 : 1280x1024, 16 bits/pixel Mode 4b : 1600x1200, 16 bits/pixel Mode 4d : 1920x1440, 16 bits/pixel Mode 50 : 640x480, 32 bits/pixel Mode 52 : 800x600, 32 bits/pixel Mode 54 : 1024x768, 32 bits/pixel Mode 58 : 1280x1024, 32 bits/pixel Mode 5a : 1600x1200, 32 bits/pixel Mode 5c : 1920x1440, 32 bits/pixel

Ahh.. Google is my friend;) After reading this: http://mandrivaonadellx1.50webs.com/display.htm I have 1280x768!! Automated the 915resolution startup like this: http://plope.com/Members/chrism/debian_rc_local_equiv
Quick guide: First of all i allready modified /etc/X11/xorg.conf (back it up now!) I copied some of the settings from: http://www.dodgyware.com/laptop/p7120.xorg.conf
Get 915resolution from: http://www.freshnet.org/debian/hoary/ Open a terminal and do a : sudo dpkg -i 915resolution_0.5-2_i386.deb sudo init 3 and kill xserver by Ctrl+Alt+Backspace Now you are in a pure shell login. Type: 915resolution -l
And you should get a list of modes, in my case there is no 1280x768 mode listed. (as you can see in my above posting) Then pick one of the modes you are never going to use, example: Mode 3a : 1600x1200, 8 bits/pixel This mode (3a) is never goning to be used by me, so i patched it with: 915resolution 4d 1280 768 24 Now mode 3a, is 1280x768. Then test by doing a: startx
1280x768 goodness...! (I was afraid this might mess the screen up)
To automate the mode patching i made a text file called /etc/init.d/local and put:
#! /bin/sh 915resolution 4d 1280 768 24
in it. then did a: sudo chmod +x /etc/init.d/local sudo update-rc.d local defaults 80 And now it works after a reboot!
This works for me (Ubuntu 5.10) |

This works for me (Ubuntu 5.10)
Thanks for all the useful notes and suggestions. I have just obtained a P7120, and am trying to get Linux installed...
I had a copy of Ubuntu 5.04 on hand, so gave that a try, which installed very except for the X server.
All I had at the completion of my install was a blank screen :-( I could use the function keys to switch to the text screens ok, and the disk and wireless lan were working fine. But even adjusting my resolution down to 1024x768 still gave me nothing when I restarted the X server.
I have tried 915resolution, but so far have achieved no sensible display. Unfortunately I could not try the sample config file at http://www.dodgyware.com/laptop/p7120.xorg.conf as dodgyware.com does not seem to exist anymore..
I do intend to try Ubuntu 5.10 and also Debian, but from the earlier postings it looks to me as though others have gotten further with 5.04 - at least with 1024x768 working.
Any suggestions? |

Hmm.. Im definatly not a Linux pro, but here is my xorg file: http://pastebin.com/616392
I actually had to reinstall everyting recently (as i messed up;). I used the Dapper Drake version of Ubuntu, and they actually have the 915resolution in the feeds now. So I downloaded it, and updated the file: /etc/default/915resolution to apply the patch mentioned in my above posting, and it worked like a charm. Even my DVD works fine now :D
if you paste the output of: cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -si "failed\|error" here, I might spot some error.
Or maby you can do a: sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg To fix your problems...?

And, when playing media files, hissing noise at background

You probably have to recompile the kernel, and compile in sata cd-rom support, to get the DVD working in that kernel version.
Btw I could not even get the latest release of knoppix running on my laptop...
I now using 6.04 Ubuntu (official release in a couple of weeks, so its quite stable) Everything works like a charm :)
my kernel version is: 2.6.15-19-386. |

Thanks for that, but for some reason (maybe my version of netscape) that "pastebin.com" link didn't work for me :-/ I just seem to get a blank document.
Anyway, I have discovered that I can get a 1024x768 display working by changing the driver from i810 to VESA.
Getting the full 1280x768 would be nice, but now that I have at least as good a display as my old notebook had, getting sound going is probably the next priority. Then I will have a sufficiently functional system able to replace my old machine, which is the first goal.
Unfortunately my Ubuntu 5.05 doesn't seem to detect any audio hardware, or at least I don't see anything in dmesg, and there is no /dev/audio.
Anyone know if this is something that would be fixed by an upgrade to 5.10?
Regards, DigbyT

I'm personally interested in buying p7120 myself, so let me clarify what you wrote: you say that with Ubuntu 6.04 even DVD/RW is working without problems?

Yup my DVD is working (from a stock 6.04 (Dapper Drake) install): dmesg | grep -s sr0 sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer dvd-ram cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray sr 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi CD-ROM sr0
Sound, wifi, Lan and bluetooth as well.
It also looks like the memory card reader gets detected correctly, but i have no sd-card to prove it yet:
Ricoh Co Ltd R5C822 SD/SDIO/MMC/MS/MSPro Host Adapter (rev 17) System peripheral: Ricoh Co Ltd R5C592 Memory Stick Bus Host Adapter (rev 08)
I even got my 3G cellphone card working in 10 minutes.
Ubuntu fits like a glove
I personaly recomend this machine higly. Its light, small, quiet, exelent battery and fast enough for me. but a bit expensive.. |

Strangly I got trouble playing DVD movies on my Mars Red Limited Edition P7120 while my boss who got a normal P7120, got no trouble. I've havent had time to investigate it futher. I dont think there is any hardware diffrence between the two, so why I get framedrops I dont know ... yet.

Wifi works like a charm, especial if you install the latest Gnome NetworkManager, and remembers to remove the eth0 and eth1 from the /etc/network/interfaces

I got it to work with SD cards, but not with Sony MemorySticks (Tried both MemoryStick and MemoryStick Pro).

Yep, it is a perfect little machine. I was in love when I first saw it, and I still am after having one for a week.
Now Im gonna work on getting the fingerprint scroll function to work.

Ok, that was a stupid error. It was cause I was using the vesa driver instead of the i810 driver. Change it and restarted X. Works nicely.

Nils, could you share your experiences with SD card reader? How you got it work? I thought no one was succesful with it so far. If you will have any luck with fingerprint sensor (at least let it scroll), let us know.
By the way: I have installed Ubuntu Dapper Flight 6 and DVD works like charm out of the box. Strange, there is no wake up from hibernation or sleep which worked without problems in Breezy. I also have still problems with mic and video out everything else works.
