Are you sure the bios cant see the drive (look for primary master on the first page of the bios)?
If the bios doesnt see it then it's most likely not an cloning or partition issue but an hardware issue.

Ipod drives are not locked to Ipod. My upgraded drive is Ipod drive from ebay as well - MK6008GAH. Update the BIOS and see what happen. |

I assume this is the BIOS update download: FJBIOS for FlashAid V1.11
When I ran the file it reported "installed version is newer than update".
The partition is active.
If it doesn't appear in the BIOS as a valid drive, but works as a USB what does that mean? Is it my notebook or the drive?

Also, is there any possibility it has anything to do with the USB interface I'm using? Maybe the USB interface isn't capable of writing to the boot sectors? It doesn't report an error, however. It was not purpose sold as a notebook backup device. |

Your BIOS is probably v.1.13. The notebook is fine. I'm 99% (not to say 100%) positive the drive is bad. The BIOS must recognize the drive no matter what. If it was a regular HDD you can play with jumpers and cables, but not with this one. Get it replaced. |

Lets get things straight, have you installed the new drive inside the P1510 using the ide cable or are you using an external usb case for the drive?

I cloned the old drive with it installed as a USB. I then put the drive inside using the instructions here. At that point it was the only hard drive connected. It would not appear in the BIOS as a drive.
I've also tried 30 other combinations. I ordered an 80gb drive so we'll see if that one works. |

Good point. When I upgraded my drive, I put the old one in a cheap ebay USB enclosure and the BIOS couldn't see it. Must be the PATA to USB controller in it. |

That ext HDD is recognized in XP, correct? If so, then to see it in DOS you must load some USB drivers(see below link). Tho, you could still use it in Ghost with or without those drivers.

You need the drive recognized in BIOS first to be bootable. It is missing from the Boot Drive Priority list. Same as the non bootable CD/DVD drives that are missing in the BIOS but works just fine in any OS. |

I have a 2.5" USB2 ext HDD, my P1610 BIOS recognizes it in the boot drive priority, but to see it in DOS I must load those USB drivers. I guess I read your post too quickly, I thought you meant your ext HDD would not show up in DOS like mine. I agree, if your ext HDD does not show up in BIOS under boot priority list it must the controller in the enclosure. |

Thats right. To boot it needs BIOS to see it. To work in a OS environment (DOS is a OS), it needs drivers. Two different things. |

Eventually I want to upgrade my P1610's HDD & buy a 1.8" ext USB enclosure. So what model enclosure do you have, I want to be sure to avoid it? Also, any suggestions on where to get a good one, ie so that it shows up in the BIOS? |

I love this forum and want to again thank everyone that contributes. After over one year following this thread, I finally upgraded my hard drive to a MK6006GAH by following the instructions posted here. Everything went smoothly and there were no problems whatsoever. Hard to beleive how easy this was.
Acronis True Image 10.0 is so good I may even buy it. In particular, thanks to Ishman for taking the time to outline the proceedure. My P1510 has a new lease on life now that I again have adequate capacity.
BTW NuovoTech, I purchased the Moving Star enclosure, works great and just large enough for the HD. Long live LeoG.net.

Good to hear that, I bought one too, but have not used it yet. Does it show up in the BIOS under the boot drive priority list? |

I'm fairly sure that it does. Not sure because my first trial was with a couple of DOA HDs that I purchased.
With my new drive is recognized it but I had to initialize and format the drive before it showed up and could be accessed from 'my computer'. Directions were easy to find if like me you don't know how.

Good stuff guys. Anyone thought about putting in a solid state drive like in the Samsung UMPC's? I know they are pretty pricey right now, but a nice thought for the future. |

That would be way faster for sure, but the current maximum is 32GBs...who wants to give up all that capacity. IE I would lose 48GBs of space to do that, IMO not a very good trade-off! |

Hi all, new user here.
What would be a good place to buy a new hard drive online? Also, does anyone know if the hd from a toshiba gigabeat would work? |

FootNote: Here's the SanDisk site with info on the 1.8" 32GB Flash SSDrive. Besides being expensive(that should drop) the current drive has a ZIF connector & will not work in the P1510/P1610. Their 2.5" version is SATA & unfortunately will not fit our P1K/P2K/P5K laptops. |
