I can confirm that the Samsung 32GB SSD works in the P1610. Replaced my hard drive with it about a week ago and never looked back. Used Ghost to copy my HD image over to the SSD without incident. I have been travelling constantly with my P1610 and wanted something resistant to damage as I have an average of 2 hard disk failures a year while on the road with other laptops in the past.
Reads from disk seem to be much faster, which helps speed up boot/resume time. On the downside writes to the drive appear to be a tad slower. That only really becomes noticable with a large write (such as hibernating my 1GB RAM to the SSD). Really could use more space, but I carry a 1.8" 60GB USB drive and a 16GB CompactFlash card (with PCMCIA adaptor) to make up for the lost capacity. Can't wait until the 64/128GB models come out! |

I use the extended battery, and also use my custom written PowerTouch app (now that I think of it, I may not have announced PowerTouch here- but instead at the GottaBeMobile.com forums).
With that said, I was already getting pretty darn good battery life. My usage varies wildly from day to day, but I can get anywhere from 6 to 9+ hours depending on what I am doing with it. I probably need to do some sort of scientific battery test, anyone know a good program to test with? |

I guess you are using Windows XP, as I believe PowerTouch application is not optimized for Vista yet. I have it installed, but it was worthless on Vista.
What I really want to know is this: How is your general experience with 1 GB of RAM and a 32 GB SSD drive, compared as when you have 512 MB (if you have that amount of memory at first) of RAM and the regular HDD? I guess it is quieter and quicker, but is it worth the $500 - $700 USD required to have both components?
I ask because I bought the 1 GB Ram module and although I see a difference, it is not that great on Vista.

Yes, I apologize for people having trouble with PowerTouch under Vista. I wrote that app under Windows XP and have not purchased a copy of Vista, so I have nothing to debug against. It definitely helps me out on XP, hopefully I will be able to release a new version for Vista users this fall.
I started with 1GB of RAM, so I have no comparison there. It is definitely quicker and quieter. After having dealt with various noisy laptop drives over the years it seeems strange to hear absolutely nothing when the disk access light is blinking furiously!
As for if it's worth it to you- hard to say. I gain a bit of speed in some areas, probably an extra 10-15% battery life, and something able to take the abuse of constant travel (VERY important to me). Of course I lost a lot of capacity (going from an 80GB HD to 32GB SSD). I think if you're only looking for more performance/speed you will find the 1GB RAM more valuable than the SSD.
Overall, It's worth it to me. For those of you who don't upgrade regularly you can probably wait and buy this 32GB SSD from me for a fair discount in 6 months when I shell out for a 64 or 128GB SSD :)

| Just upgraded my p1610 with a 32GB SSD from NEWEGG... it's like a whole new machine... it screams... I'll run some time trials but my Logos Bible suite is several times faster (read 200-300% FASTER)... boot times unbelieveable... so happy!!! |

OK... I've been using my p1610 with SSD for several weeks now. Time for a status report. Typical battery life with extended battery... power saver mode on... wifi as needed... easily lasts all day... 6+ hours continuous use...(while in seminary) 9+ typical office use (meetings etc.)
Speed is outstanding... boots Vista Ultimate in less than 30 Seconds. Screams through Logos library (e.g. full Library search for all references to John 3:16 might have taken a full five minutes pre SSD... now minute and ten seconds)
Switching between OneNote 2007, Logos, Microsoft Word 2007 was painful... now virtually instant.
Bottom line... expensive upgrade but in my book worth every penny... can't believe the difference! |

As soon as the 64GB SSD comes down to $500 or so, I think I'll join you in the solid state world. But 32GB is just too small.

Hello,
I just want to add me to the happy campers using an SDD drive. I really enjoy using the machine now. As the P1610 is not my main machine, I can afford to have less storage space. I'm using it just for notes with my clients (almost instant on and 5 secs to load for the first time OneNote) and some other PC stuff.
I really recommend the switch. Just don't forget to de authorize your copy of Windows before the change, or you will have problems.

Estuardo4, I'm deeply envious. So did you get the Samsung 32GB SSD and how much did you pay for it? I've been monitoring the prices for the Samsung 32GB SSD and it hasn't come down a bit, refusing to drop below $500.

I didn't know how to do it, I just upgraded the drive and copied my cloned copy of Vista. When I booted up, Vista complained that my copy was already used and listed me the options i have to legalize my machine again. I talked with Microsoft service phone line and they give me a number to authorize my copy again.
I think that the question on how to de authorize your copy of Vista has to be asked to an expert.

I paid $485 from Newegg (plus shipping), when they still have them at that price. But the good news for me is that my company accepted to pay for it as an expense. :)
It is a lot of money to pay for it, but for me, it turned my P1610 on a instant on and off note taker, agenda, Outlook and Office computer.

That doesn't sound plausible, as I bought mine just a couple of months ago. A quick search on Google turns up a couple of places that say thay're still in stock. I assume Toshiba is still making them for the iPod, if nothing else (I believe it's the same drive). Unless, of course, Apple's new iPods to be announced later this week go with all solid state drives...
Even if they are discontinued, if you really want one, I'll be surprised if you can't track one down somewhere. |

It's actually quite plausible since Toshiba de-listed the MK8007GAH from their 1.8" HDD website a while back. Take note the MK8009GAH, which is a ZIF model, is still listed. I really did wonder back then but never called Toshiba about it.
I also agree with DP that some places online should still have remaining stock.
