There was no explanation of why the line of products had been discontinued. The fact that all compatible models have been discontinued is even more intriguing... either simply the demand is not there and the decision to not sell is a pure business decision or an OEM (perhaps Apple) wants to stop customers from retrofitting their products instead of buying upgrades from them or new products???

Thanks for pointing out that there will probably be Toshiba stock left in the market for some time (this is how I will solve my needs short-term) -- however, it would still be interesting to know if anyone suggest other manufacturers/models that are compatible with the P1510? What will Fujitsu be using in the future?

Cheers,
Christer

Wow! $50 less than what I paid for the same drive. The good thing is that I'm not paying for it. But please don't show this price to my IT guy :)

Did you check the price on newegg.com for the 64 GB SSD disk from Samsung? $1,299.00!!!

You are aware that's a 2.5" drive? I assume Samsung will make a 64GB 1.8" drive available sometime soon.

AFAIK only the NonZIF Toshiba HDDs & Samsung SSDs fit in our P1610s, it's worth noting Toshiba still lists the NonZIF 60GB drive as being current(check "website" link in my last post).

Very good question, in fact how will they be able to continue to offer the 80GB HDD option on new P1610s? Did they buy all remaining 80GB HDD stock?

Quite possibly Toshiba realizes the role 1.8" solid state drives will play in the near future & are getting "out of the way" now? They must be working on SSDs also...

Here's the answer (I think) on what's up with Toshiba and the 1.8 inch hard drives. It seems it was, in fact, related to new iPods:

Good Lord, 3600RPM!! I hadn't even noticed that.

Considering that the hard drive is, in my opinion, the biggest bottleneck on our machines, this seems like a positively disastrous development. I wonder if this spells the end of the 1.8 inch drivc in laptops and will more quickly usher in the age of the SSD.

Or perhaps they'll find a way to squeeze in a 2.5 inch drive in the next generation P1610?

God help us if the future holds 3600RPM drives!!

Does anybody know where I can acquire a Moving Star or A-Power 1.8" HDD enclosure? Or is someone willing to part with theirs? I've looked for the past week but all the sellers are now out of stock. Thanks!

Maybe here, tho it might be a different brand?

If anybody's looking, I just got notified of one of these 80GB drives being up on eBay. I had set up a search when I was looking for one and it hasn't expired yet. Just search under MK8007GAH and you'll find it. It runs for four more days...

I hope this doesn't violate any forum policies! I have no connection with the auction, but thought I'd pass it along since these drives seem somewhat scarce these days.

Thanks for the alert. The 16GB model is now $204.99. Yes, extremely tempting. Here's the link for both Samsung SDD drives on Newegg.

Question for anyone here who's installed the Samsung 16/32GB SSD in their P1510/P1610? Does the extra thickness(see NewEgg reviews) present any fit problems?

Is the P1610 your main computer? If the answer is yes, then I don't think it is a good idea to buy a SSD drive, as you must have space to fit all your documents, pictures, videos, MP3, etc.

But if the P1610 is not your main computer, then do yourself a favor and buy one of the 16 or 32 GB SSDs, as they are proven to be a worthwhile investment.

My Vista install is at 6 GB, so I have plenty of space to store documents synced to my main computer. If you buy the 16 GB one, you still have 10 GB left. I think that's plenty of space.

And if you need more storage space, you can always buy Compact Flash or SD cards on the cheap.

That's the opinion of a very satisfied user of SSDs drives.

Just recieved and installed the Samsung 32gig SSD from Newegg over the weekend. Did a clean Vista ultimate install with updated drivers from the Fujitsu website.. Now instead of a sluggish "buyer's regret" machine, I have a nice snappy new toy...

If you have the money, this upgrade is well worth it.

Cheers

Guide on upgrading the hard drive on the P1510D.
The first order of business is to acquire a new hard drive preferably faster and of course larger. You can use some of the drives out of the
IPOD 60GB or even 40GB. I purchased the Toshiba 60 GB OEM drive from the following link:
http://www.nowdirect.com/direct/partInfo/part_detail.tsb?partid=23454 for $174.61 This was the best price for a new drive that I found. That is unless you paid the 150.00 to upgrade from Fujitsu.
But if at the time you were short on cash, here is a solution that works for only a few dollars more.
Once you get the new drive you have two options:
1. Install the new drive and restore with the factory default CD or you can restore from an image file.
2. Use a USB 1.8 in drive storage container (pick one from eBay or other locations for less than $20.00). This offers you the ability to clone your existing drive to the new drive and also
have a portable 30GB storage drive after.

I use Acronis True Image http://www.acronis.com/ to clone my drive to the USB drive. They have a free 15 day version. Then just swap out the drive and you have an instant upgrade.
To swap the drive you must first remove the three screws holding the plate.

Once this is done you can gently lift the drive up and remove the connector from the drive only. It is just slightly snug and should come apart relatively easy.

You will notice that the drive has a plastic cover along the bottom and 4 rubber adhesive feet at each corner (see below). This should be removed and placed on the new drive.
This should be done gently as not to destroy any of the edges. It is a simple procedure. Once this is done you can attach the new drive back to the cable.

A few notes: The drive only attaches one way due to the one round and one rectangular plug features. Notice the label side is facing you when done correctly (1st picture).
Also the 60GB drive is a few mm larger than the 30 GB but it fits fine.
With regard to the portable USB drive make sure you get one for the Toshiba drive and not the Hitachi. The Toshiba has a female connector while the Hitachi has the male.

Really? In Vista, my \Windows directory is 10gb, and there's at least 500 megs of system stuff in the \Users directory.

In the \Windows directory the main culprits are \winsxs at 3.2gb, \System32 at 2.8gb, and 1.3gb in \Installer.

Major software I've installed is Visual Studio 2k5 w/ MSDN and Office 2k7.

Honestly, I don't see how you could really have a usable computer with Vista and the 16gb drive. Even with the 32gb I'd have to delete more stuff than I'm comfortable with... I've used WinDirStat and just have to conclude Vista's a tad bloated, at least after an upgrade to XP.

Then you figure in 1gb for the suspend file, a gig or two of disk cache, 10% of the drive for the restore point, and I'm not really sure 32gb is enough to have many apps installed as well...

Well, as i wrote, it all depends on your needs. My Vista install is still at 6GB after a couple of months of use (and installing all the KB updates). I make weekly backups with Acronis and I'm using an 8GB CF as the documents directory storage. I have plenty of apps installed and I don't put the computer to hibernate. And when my computer does hibernate due to low battery charge, I simply erase the hibernate file. My boot time clocks at 56 seconds, so I don't really need to hibernate.

My machine is running like a dream. A dream come true for my needs.

A simple question I just can't seem to find.

Can I upgrade my 1510D with a SSD flash drive?

I seem to only have found 1610 users saying they can. Please someone with a 1510D (or 1510) let me know.

Thank you soo much!

UPS should be dropping off the Toshiba 32GB SSD any day now, so I'll update on how it performs in my P1510D.

Yes - I've been running the Samsung SSD 32G for about a week in my 1510D; no problems. Took about 3 minutes to install, fit fine. I did a clean install of XPTC with the restore CD.

Does that restore require a hidden D: partition on your HDD?

Nope - you can repartition before you install (all but 8 MB); it will format and install to partition C: .....or let the restore reformat the entire drive as one partition.

I set up 2 partitions as I do with all my computers.
